Forndata Summer 2022 started at 6 pm and went on until midnight. It was scaled back due to few people wanting to attend in person. But it went live on Twitch instead and was everything we come to expect from it. And we don’t know who won at this time. First out is ADKD of Defiance with a song is called St-svarup jedi 2. ADKD is Norwegian and goes by a lot of names like Kefir, Slimer and Govatsapadam. The song take me back to the early 90s in front of my Amiga. It doesn’t get more module than this. Awesome!

Exactly like ADKD. The tune is called Mirakelkur, which is Swedish for “Miracle cure”. Not too hard to guess, eh? The tune has a lot of nice chords that feels the right kind of “synthy”. Sweet.

Modarchive.org has a small, but active community that makes sure tracked music is saved for posterity. It has all the superb, awesome, great, good, mediocre, dismal and horrible music that the scene has composed. Or at least a lot of it. How do you know what good and what is not? Stars! Vangelis. The man behind Chariots of fire, Conquest of Paradise and the music in Bladerunner has left us. On the 17th of May, he concluded his work leaving it to posterity. DJ Daemon celebrates the man by simply playing songs from tracked music artists that clearly must have been inspired by him.An apologyThis podcast differs from the original broadcast in that the tune "Syndrom land" by MAF has been removed. Some listeners took offence as it was out of place in a remembrance program. I apologize for this lapse in judgement and this part of the program has now been remade.

16:40 DJ Daemon: Raiden of Satori is all over the place with Claustrophobic Effect on place 10. It’s soft, it’s hard. It’s techno, it’s gaming music, it’s whatever it wants to be. This nets it 621 points.

20:27 DJ Daemon: The next song is fascinating to me, as it seems to have an effect that sounds like an overactive audio compressor. But other than that, it sounds very classic Amiga. 22:59 DJ Daemon: Honestly, I get more and more sure that Curt Cool is a promise of interesting, tracked tunes. He creates good stuff that has a very distinctly unique feeling to them. And “Diskthief” is exactly like that. He is a member of Depth and Nah-Kolor and gets 646 points and place 9.

29:27 DJ Daemon: Next song makes use of heavy samplings that are extremely “trashy”. Everything is distorted, giving a rough feeling even when it’s trying to sound soft and mellow. Kinda cool. The GreaFox actually sings on the next song called Syndrome. It seems to be about pain and struggles. Raveolution wrote on Modarchive in 2021 while rating it 9 out 10: LOL this song is crazy. I've had some episodes of serious aches and pains and can't walk can't sleep moments in my life so I feel this guy's pain. This song never ceases to get my attention. Life ain't always perfect folks. Be glad for your good health, I sure am glad for mine!

Smart use of guitar squeaks to make it sound like the guitar player is shifting from note to note. The only other instruments are drums and bass, so it gets pretty repetitive towards the end. 03:19 Ok, first off: what’s a music disk? I like to think of it as a demo that plays a playlist of music. Spotify on a diskette if I may say so. Both music disks we play in this hour can be loaded in your Amiga and will then show some cool graphics and then let you play the tracker music from a menu. As I said earlier, all music today comes from the music disks Cheesy listening and Chipo Django. And from Cheesy listening, we take another track called: Game over, man. It’s the first of the tunes on the list and shows just how versatile Virgill is as an artist.

06:25 Cheesy listening is a true gem of a music disk that runs on any Amiga and all music here was recorded from my Amiga 1200 yesterday. This ensure it will be playing without any emulation problem. … Well, onto the other music disk we play today, Chipo Django. It has artist Virgill as an artist and organizer. And yes, it’s same Virgill that’s behind Cheesy Listening. But Chipo Django has a wider range of other artists for its collection of tunes. We’re going for Slash and the tune Paws and claws from Chipo Django.

10:12 So Cheesy listening was released yesterday, on the 11th of February 2022 while Chipo Django was release on the 9th of October. It won 2nd prize in the Deadline 2021 wild competition. It may seem a bit strange we didn’t cover it, but we only cover the tracked music competition, not the wild ones.

13:39 Chipo Django boots from the floppy or Gotek and then starts a very typical demo interface with the Raubenauge logo and then a music selector that has color scheme that is made up of deeply blue shades. It has several great selections of music, and I really enjoy Triace’s “Paula at the disco”. You should know, but Paula is the legendary 8bit chip that makes all sounds and music possible on the Amiga. A magic device in the age before we had sound cards in all our computers.

17:42 Cheesy music chooses a more funny and far more polished intro where the graphics in the intro follows the music. The theme is a mouse playing an Amiga 500 as a guitar and the menu of selectable music is well-created and allows you to see remaining time of the track playing and has the classic four channel VU-meters you expect on the Amiga. If you leave the computer alone, it even has a mouse-themed screensaver and that makes it even more awesome. In a true “Travelling Wilburys”-manner, the artists have invented fake names for themselves. And that’s funny because their real names are handles as well. Virgill calls himself “Cheddar”, Critikill is known as “Raclette”, and Nosferatu goes by the name “Gruyere”. And those are names of cheese by the way.

21:47 The music on Chipo Django has a greater variety, whereas all the tunes on Cheesy listening have a theme or sorts. They sound similar. Also, all music is by Virgill. The artists on Chipo Django are Curt cool, Dalezy, Maze, Okeanos, Trace, Slash, Vedder and off course Virgill. Let’s get Curt Cool a chance and it’s from Chipo Django. The tune is called Quickshot dramaking.

25:30 So, which is the better music disk? In my opinion, they’re both great, but Chipo Django has a variety that Cheesy listening lacks. But when it comes to presentation, Cheesy is really well-produced in a funny and compelling way, so it wins there. I give Chipo Django five out of five and Cheesy listening four out of five. It was once almost a derogatary term for tracked music trying to sound like it was meant to play on an Atari, C64 or NES. But it turned out to become a very successful style of tracked music in its own right.

05:40 DJ Daemon: Released in 1990, Sid Meier's legendary nation builder may be one of the most famous game series ever made. And weirdly enough, it came from Microprose, a company mostly making flight simulators. The genre is called 4X, as in "Explore - Expand - Exploit - Exterminate". You start as one of up to seven other Civilization vying for the same humble goals: gobbling everything up, ruling the world and the finally launching a ship to the stars. You know, basic stuff. But we all start out small: in 4000 BCE, you're just a small tribe of men and women looking for a place to call home. And then you go from there.

12:15 DJ Daemon: "I have no idea how any of this works". That was my first words as I loaded my pirate copy of Civilization I for the Amiga. Many hours later, my chief concern was how to not be forced by my father to bed. I just had to play one more turn of this magnificent game! Yeah, about the term. The game creator himself, Sid Meier, got this from the first feedback the development team got from the players: they couldn't stop playing. "Just one more turn" means, more like "It's 3 am and I need to get to work in the morning. Oh no! But I need to fix this in the game first."

15:26 DJ Daemon: The first game came out, as I said, in 1990. And to this day, the most recent game in the series is "Civilization 6". But let’s talk about the first game and more specifically, the Amiga version. It came on four diskettes and had all the bells and whistles of the PC-game. But the intro was horrible slow and had to be watched every time you started the game. It went on for several dreary minutes. It showed how earth was formed and, in the end, there were us. This is a bit weird, as it's well known that if earth's whole existence was compressed to just one day, humans would have come along the last two seconds.

19:17 DJ Daemon: The game is played with a few important tasks to consider: · Building your empire. · Defending or attacking. · Researching science. · Directing your cities. Among the other Civilizations you must deal with are the English, the French, the Americans, Chinese, the Babylonians, and the Indians. You can trade with them, fight and even exterminate them and you must beat them in scientific research. You see, the goal is to either crush all the other civilizations or to launch an expedition to Alpha Centaury before anyone else does. They have different levels of agendas, modus operandi, and aggression levels. When we speak of aggression levels and Gandhi, I have a funny story for you.

25:07 DJ Daemon: Gandhi is the kindest and most peaceful opponent, if I even should call him that, the game has to offer. Always choosing the nice way out, except when he goes totally ballistic and nukes everyone else for no apparent reason. This is the game's most famous bug. All civilizations have an aggression counter that goes from 0 to 255, where 255 is a total war monger maniac and 0 is pacifist to the core. Gandhi's India is pegged at 1 and is sugar and spice and everything nice. At a about the same time nukes come available most civilizations switch to democracy. This subtracts 2 from the aggression level of that civilization. India is at 1 and you subtract 2. Does not compute! The game then mistakenly interprets that as 255 and so Gandhi basically becomes the lovechild between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

31:37 DJ Daemon: I got to admit something here: the Gandhi story is true, but vastly overblown. You may be forgiven for never seeing Gandhi at all as India will only be available if you select 6 other opponents. Also, democracies cannot start wars, meaning Gandhi will be ok to deal with if you didn't start a war with him before Indian became a democracy. Oh, and India’s passive stance on war often gets them wiped out before the nuclear age. But still, it's a good story!

34:18 DJ Daemon: Sid Meier and Bruce Shelley, who is a board game designer played around with the idea that would later become Civilization. The inspiration were games as "Empire", "Railroad Tycoon" and "Sim City". They wondered what would be bigger as a concept than Sid’s earlier game "Railroad Tycoon". The answer was Civilization, and it was an instant success coming first to the PC for MS Dos. When the Amiga-version came out in 1992, the Swedish computer Magazine "Datormagazin" reviewed it and gave it among the highest scores that they ever awarded: 99% and reviewer Johan Buren took off his hat for the game. It was called "The best game ever" by them.

40:35 DJ Daemon: Graphics, sound, and music were good but not spectacular. Everything was up to the magic game play. You tried to manage the economy, setting up goals for your research, building the wonders of the world, keeping tabs on the opponents, and beefing up your military. All at the same time. Later games become more policy driven and put in planning as a central part of the game. One of the most interesting parts of the game is how it always require you to pay attention. But if you start winning so much that you are superior to the other, it can become a bit tedious. Thankfully the difficulty of the game can be adjuster.

46:53 DJ Daemon: Just to sum it up: the game series has become a staple of strategy gaming and later games did massive improvements and fixed many of Civilization 1s shortcoming. My father loves the council you have in Civilization II, which was when Full Motion Video was all the rage. The ministers shout, bicker with each other, complains and makes cheesy Elvis Presley references. The later games added religions, culture pressure, spy craft, better diplomacy, and several different new victory conditions. My favorite later date Civilization is the fifth installment. I don't really like Civilization VI, for reasons I'm not entirely clear of.

02:24 DJ Daemon: Christmas is over, but this had to be the first song any way, as it's a cool tune and done as a four track Amiga-tune. Released on the 19th december and its got 3rd place in the Forndata 2020 competition. We will talk about the artist in a few minutes, but we must go on with the next tune. Andromeda survivors, a soft tune that picks up tempo. It may only have reached place 9 in the Outline 2021 competition, but still show case his skills and acumen. I totally missed this one, but it has now been rectified. Nice use of Fasttracker.

08:01 DJ Daemon: So, what do we know about the artist? He is Polish and his real surname or givenname is most likely Marcin. He is credited with 35 releases by DemoZoo and seems to have become active in the scene during 2019. Next up is Blackcurrant magic. It hit place 7 on the 28th of September in the Flash party 2019 tracked music competition. The title sounds like the name of an eastern European brand of really horrible alcohol, but it's instead a very jumpy tune with a serious chip-tune quality to it.

11:34 DJ Daemon: Last song was done with FastTracker, and so is the next one. It's called Beyond the sunshine and got to fifth place in the DEMOSPLASH 2019 freestyle audio competition. It was released on the 9th of November that year. A driven tune with a slow start that builds up speed. Kinda what we expect from many of his tunes.

15:54 DJ Daemon: We need to get back to the more jumpy cuteness of a really good Amiga four channel tracker mod, and this is done with Tove Jansson's groove. Here E!ghtBM references Finnish/Swedish childrens book author Tove Jansson, most famous for her stories about the Moomin-trolls. It got to second place in the Gubbdata 2019 competition and was released on the 29th of June that year.

18:33 DJ Daemon: Let's slow the tempo down quite a bit, and it's easily done with E!ghtBM's "Sunday room full of stars". It was released on the 22nd of February in the Chaos constructions 2020 winter invitation music competition and landed on 2nd place with it's Fasttracker goodness.

30:55 DJ Daemon: Take to the skies with Lilienthal's Aparatum, which probably is a reference Otto Lilienthal, an early inventor in the history of aviation. It's a tune sounding very E!ghtBM with his signature style of composition. It's the murder weapon that killed its way to the 8th place in the Syntax 2020 tracked music competition as it was released on the 28th of November that year. Upbeat, a bit heavy and with a perky shimmer to it. Dance to it, I dare you!

34:10 DJ Daemon: Same, same, but different. Next up is System Override, where E!ghtBM keeps the tempo going in a track released on the 9th of June in the Flashback 2019 tracked competition. Now you should know that his tool of choice is Fasttracker.

36:53 DJ Daemon: This one is a bit on the weird side as it has vocals and is a classic Amiga 4 channels module. Summertime with Kimberly is well spent time and a pretty heavy construct that crashed into place 7 in the Flash party 2019 music competition on the 28th of September. No surprise here: it starts slowly and then builds up tempo. I love hearing this being done for everyone favourite girl friend, the Amiga.

41:16 DJ Daemon: The last of our new tunes for this station brutally enters the stage: Transformata 137. It's a techno style tune with a very crushing style and driven tempo. It may be the road less travelled for E!ghtBM, but he moves down that road with style and precision. It was a well deserved first place in the Xenium tracked msx competiton and was released on the 31st of August. Warning for explicit language in this Fasttracker tune.

07:38 DJ Daemon: It seems like Ukrainian artist Noob from Kiev hasn’t bothered finding a name for his creation. He pulls an old, classic trick, but calling it “untitled track”. It’s another journey over the keys of the piano, but this time it flies through brightly lit skies and lands a mere minute later at place six.

09:07 DJ Daemon: Russia is back in the game with “Moonwalker’s 10 minutes trash” by Scalesmann. But there are two things wrong here, it’s not 10 minutes and definitely not trash. Pretty classic style of 2000s tracked music with nice chords mixed up with some funkiness. A bit repetitive sometimes and it gets place 5.

11:21 DJ Daemon: Noob’s real name is Jaroslav Diachenko and his first tunes in modarchive are from around 2019. According to demo scene, this is his first participation in the demo scene. The tune is called Midnight travel and sounds like music from a mid-90s computer game. Really love the airy strings. Place 4.

13:09 DJ Daemon: e!ghtbm and Magnetic-Fox from Poland teams together and this leads them right into bronze position with cool, mellow, but jumpy tune called winter melonide. I hope that isn’t a typo. Place 3 as you understand.

16:53 DJ Daemon: Silver position and here we find Fatalsnipe from Belarus. The tune, Salvanage has a pretty techno style which would have made a big success on the dance floors during the 90s.

The song brings me good feelings as retro stuff always does.

Atari ST musician Jochen Hippel (Mad Max) ported the game to the Amiga and also created the music for it. In 1993, Virtual Dreams and Fairlight released the Amiga demo Full Moon containing a Protracker module called “Nearly There” by Jogeir Liljedahl.
